CHASE'S DISCUS LABORATORY

Interactive Discus Flight Model & Throwing Experiments

Welcome to my Discus Lab!!!

This website is an experimental engineering project about discus flight, throwing mechanics, and physics.

Try changing the numbers below and see what happens to the throw. Eventually this thing is going to have much more realistic aerodynamics.

WARNING: This website is scientifically serious but aesthetically unserious.

Throwing Field View

How Does This Work?

Right now the simulator uses a basic projectile-motion model.

The discus starts with a velocity determined by its release speed and angle. Gravity then pulls it downward while the horizontal component of its velocity carries it forward.

Wind can also change the simulated horizontal and sideways motion.

Future upgrades:

  • Aerodynamic drag
  • Lift
  • Spin rate
  • Angle of attack
  • Changing wind during flight
  • Biomechanics of the throw
  • Comparison with real throwing data

Eventually I want this to become a real numerical simulation instead of just a projectile calculator.

About This Project

I made this project because I throw discus for my school and I'm interested in the biomechanics aspect of mechanical engineering.

The goal is to combine physics + engineering + athletics into one project that I can actually experiment with.

More updates coming...
